A closer look at gut health

Gut health is trending.
Actually, it’s a topic nutritionists know too well because it is often the first thing we look at when working with individuals.
It’s, quite literally, central to our wellbeing.
In fact, gut health is so important that Hippocrates once coined the phrase “all disease begins in the gut”.
His logic was sound but luckily we’ve made some advances in medicine since then (for context Hippocrates was a Greek philosopher from 2000 years ago).
What we should consider instead is our digestive system “decides” how many nutrients we absorb from our food. Effectively, we aren’t what eat, we are what we absorb.

Here is where things become more complicated.
Our gut is home to trillions of microbes that can either help us feel amazing or contribute to poor health.
Which end of the spectrum we may find ourselves on depends on how well we look after our gut microbes.
Cue this one-hour talk via Zoom, designed to help you understand and look after your gut health.

The Principles of Good Nutrition via Zoom

Hosted by BANT registered nutritionist Eva Humphries, this 60-minute Zoom session covers the main principles of good nutrition.

Ok, boring intro over.
I’m Eva, a pretty awesome nutritionist with a super realistic approach to nutrition.
In fact, I’m known for promoting the kind of nutrition principles that allow you to have some wine/ eat that cake/ ice cream/ whatever you fancy but still feel awesome every day.
You see, nutrition is more about what you need to ADD into your diet rather than all those “bad foods” that need to be excluded.
Newsflash: “bad” foods don’t really exist. BUT there is such a thing as a diet that is devoid of nutrients that in turn will make you feel like turd*.

*turd is not a swear word so I reserve the right to use it.

This talk will take you through all of the nutrients needed that may help run these flesh suits we live in like the beautiful machines they deserve to be.
It’s not a boring 1-hour lecture so expect mini-quizzes, funny stories and actual useable advice that you can implement straight away.

Here is what we’ll be covering:

- the main principles of good nutrition that helped hundreds of my nutrition clients feel amazing
- common nutrient deficiencies to watch out for
- what to add into your diet for feel-good nutrition vibes
- things that may be letting your nutrition-game down
- a practical look at how to make the recommendations happen

Plus, you’ll also get the chance to ask questions should you wish.

Grab yourself a ticket using the link below and join me via Zoom for an hour(ish) on Thursday the 11th of August.

Eating for the Planet - Sustainable Approaches to Healthy Eating

Eating for the Planet.png

It seems like a week can’t pass without a food or food group being vilified for its affect on the environment and/ or because it is seemingly now bad for us.
Can we still eat meat? Should we forego grains? Are fish really all toxic? Is plant-based the only way?
It’s all just a tad confusing.

Join this talk and let me bring clarity to eating well in a sustainable way.
(In case you are new here, hi, my name is Eva Humphries, a BANT registered nutritionist. You can read more about me here.)
Delivered via Zoom, this 60-minute session will outline the principles of healthy eating that are easy to achieve, are realistic to do so and have minimal impact on our environment.

The talk will cover:
- the nutrients and dietary components needed to fuel the human body for optimum wellbeing - aka a no nonsense but evidence-based look at what a healthy diet actually looks like
- debunking the myths of meat, let’s look at the current evidence
- an overview of sustainable protein sources
- the scoop on organic
- tips for choosing foods that have a lower impact on the environment
- tips & tricks to make sustainable healthy eating easy

Like all my talks, the focus is on achievable action points. Theory and evidence are great (these also feature), but I want you to leave the talk with concrete ideas on how you can change your eating patterns for the better and know how to achieve this with ease.
Join me on the 2

28th of July at 6:30pm via Zoom and let me arm you with the relevant knowledge on how to eat well in a sustainable way.

Your Microbiome - The hidden secret for improving your wellbeing

Your Microbiome - The hidden secret for improving your wellbeing

Did you know the human body harbours 10x more microbial cells than human cells?
Let me introduce you to your microbiome, a community of microbes that live in the gut, on the skin and elsewhere in the body that are crucial for your overall wellbeing.

In case you are new here, hi, my name is Eva Humphries, a BANT registered nutritionist. You can read more about me here.

Ok, don’t freak out, but we all have a large number of microbes on us. They are, mostly beneficial, in fact, we actually need them to stay healthy.
The largest collection of these microbes are in the gut, where their main job is to ferment the fibre we can’t otherwise digest.
In exchange for the fibre, the microbes send us “thank you gifts”, namely things like biotin, Vitamin K and short chain fatty acids that then directly nourish us. We have this mutually beneficial agreement with them whereby we give them somewhere to live and they help us be healthy.

This relationship isn’t so simple though.
Our microbiome actually has an effect on most of our body, including:
- the way we digest our food. Bloated? This will likely be down to an imbalanced microbiome.
- the absorption of nutrients - without these little organisms, we can’t obtain all of the nutrients we need
- hormones - yes, even our hormones are affected by bacteria
- brain health and even your mood - you know those brain chemicals that make you feel happy? They are very heavily influenced by the microbiome.
- the skin - eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis and acne may all be linked to the microbiome
- the immune system - the microbiome strengthens the immune system
- weight gain/ loss - struggling to lose weight? An imbalanced microbiome may be at play.
& many many others

So why am I telling you this?
Your microbiome is quite literally the hidden secret to improving your wellbeing.
Sadly, we don’t pay enough attention to it so most of us live with some depletions in our microbiome but with some small tweaks and few new foods added, the microbiome can be harnessed to our advantage.
It is a crucial piece of the health puzzle that could be keeping you from feeling amazing every day.

Join me for this informative talk on the 25th of April and learn how to harness your microbiome.

Essential Nutrition for Female Health

From higher levels of essential nutrients to specific compounds for hormone health, women have a different need for nourishment.
General health guidelines rarely make reference to these variations and to make it even more confusing, nutrient requirements also vary with age.

This is precisely why I wanted to cover this super important topic.
If you are new here, hi, my name is Eva, a BANT registered nutritionist and you can read more about me here.

The talk(s) titled ‘Essential Nutrition for Female Health’, taking place on the 13th of March, take a relaxed, fad-free look at the nutrients we as women need for optimum health and to feel amazing every single day.
I did mention there is a slight variation with age, so the talk is split into two:

  • 9am Essential Nutrition for Female Health 40+

  • 10:30am Essential Nutrition for Female Health 18 - 39-year-olds

Both talks will cover important topics such as:

  • Nutrients we as women need more of and the foods that contain them

  • Conquering hormones - foods that help and foods that hinder hormone balance at every age

  • Troubleshooting issues such as PMS (18-39)

  • Dealing with lower hormone levels (40+)

  • Everyday tips and tricks that may make a big difference

The talk(s) are relaxed and non-prescriptive, after all, a perfect diet doesn’t actually exist.
You’ll also get a chance to ask questions and to interact (via Zoom chat) during the session if you wish.

Here are the ins and out:
The talk(s) will be held via Zoom on the 13th of March 2021.

Good Mood Food (via Zoom)

Good Mood Food (via Zoom)

Good mood food.png

Did you know there is a huge link between what you eat and how you feel every day?

Sadly, for the majority of us, the relationship between food and our mood isn’t obvious and thus we often ignore the warning signs.
Take, for example, a stressful period of time. Ever noticed that you still feel low after the stress has been dealt with? The reason is the inflammation left behind by the stress. The answer is dealing with said inflammation through the addition of foods that are high in anti-inflammatory compounds. (Big words, I know, but it’s actually pretty simple to implement.)
This process described above is lesser-known, so we blame that stressful job/ lockdowns/ general life stuff and hope that one day it gets better.
The truth is, it can get better now with a few clever changes.

Our mood is heavily influenced by a set number of nutrients, the lack of which changes how we feel in ourselves.
Get it right and you can build a new level of resilience with food.
Let me give you a few more examples:
- dehydration (simply not drinking 6-8 glasses of water) is the biggest cause of fatigue
- your gut bacteria can virtually hijack your brain and make you feel not ok
- your morning coffee may be responsible for those afternoon mood swings (don’t worry, you can still have the coffee, it’s all about timing it right)

Let me help you feel amazing.
If you are new here, hi, my name is Eva Humphries and I’m a BANT registered nutritionist. You can learn more about me here.

On the 13th of February, I will be breaking down the essentials of harnessing food for better mood during a relaxed 1-hour talk via Zoom.
Here is what you can expect to learn:
- the essential nutrients needed for better mood and the foods that contain them
- building mental resilience with food - yes, this is achievable
- realistic advice to help you get started
- the outline of a kickstart plan to feel good through food

Like all of my talks, the advice given is super realistic but science-backed.
I focus on giving you the kind of information that you can action tomorrow without overwhelm.
Plus, you’ll also get a chance to ask questions (if you wish).

So join me and learn the tools to lift your mood with food:

Here are the ins and out:
The talk will be held via Zoom at 10 am on the 13th of February 2021.
Complete your purchase and you will be sent the link to join the talk.
Your camera will remain switched off and your mic will be muted during the talk, meaning you can watch in your pyjamas if you wish.
The cost of tickets is £15 which gives you a chance to attend this virtual talk.

There is no catch or anything else to purchase.
